Alloy 422 is a hardenable, martensitic stainless steel generally used in temperatures as high as 1200 F. Heat treatment results in the material offering good scaling and oxidation resistance thanks to its high mechanical properties.
Heat treatment must be extremely sensitive as 422 is susceptible to cracking.
The alloy is readily machinable in the annealed condition with machining characteristics comparable to those of alloy 420 stainless steel.
422 applications include high temperature bolting and valve and valve trim, in addition to buckets and blades in steam turbines.
