AZ31B is widely available in magnesium grades and features a very high machinability rating.
The alloy’s high strength to weight ratio makes AZ31B a great alternative to aluminum alloys and it is commonly used in aerospace applications.
While the magnesium alloy does feature an excellent machinability rating, the material is very flammable and it should be handled with caution. The best forming results of AZ31B are obtained by preheating the material to 500 F.
In addition to aerospace applications, AZ31B is used in general commercial applications that require good properties and high strength to weight ratio.
